Collaborative & Proactive Solutions

A Communication-Focused, Problem-Solving Approach

When kids display concerning behaviour, they’re communicating that there’s an expectation (routine, social situation, task, etc) they can’t cope with in that moment.  Rather than resorting to shame, blame, or punishment, CPS helps us identify and solve these underlying issues together.

Why Communication Matters

At the heart of CPS is finding a system where the child can be heard. By giving them space to share their thoughts—you gain crucial insights into the struggles they face. This empathy-led approach shifts the conversation from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What’s going on for you?”

CPS is an evidence-based, trauma-informed, and neurodiversity-affirming model that shifts the focus from managing behaviours to proactively solving the problems causing them. Rather than relying on consequences or exclusion, CPS guides us to collaborate with children and their supporters to find sustainable solutions. It has been successfully adopted in families, schools, mental health settings, and even juvenile detention facilities—reducing crisis moments and minimising disciplinary measures like detentions, suspensions, restraints, and seclusions.

Where Compassion Meets Science

Being Proactive Instead of Responding to Symptoms

All children have times where they have difficulty meeting expectations. Some communicate it through withdrawal or sulking whereas others may yell, kick, or spit—and are more likely to encounter punishment or blame. Yet both are communicating the same message: “I’m struggling to meet this expectation.” CPS helps you identify the unmet expectation, understand what is making it hard for the child to meet the expectation and solve the problems and create solutions collaboratively and proactively, instead of reacting after the fact.

CPS fundamentally changes the caregiver’s role. By working alongside the child, you move from being a disciplinarian to a problem-solving partner—one who recognises that kids do well if they can. This small shift in perspective can transform relationships and outcomes.
