Breathwork

Breathwork is an umbrella term used to describe practices that include conscious, connected breathing techniques such as yoga breathing (pranayama), box breathing, coherence breathing, and more.

In recent years, Breathwork has become increasingly popular with growing research highlighting its profound benefits across many areas of personal wellness.

Some styles of Breathwork involve fast, intense, mouth-based breathing designed to activate the sympathetic nervous system, while others focus on gentle, nose-based breathing to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. Rebirthing Breathwork Mastery falls into the latter category, a parasympathetic activation breath that is subtle and relaxed, supporting a wide range of transformative experiences.

What is Rebirthing Breathwork Mastery (RBM)?

RBM is a gentle, conscious and connected breathwork style that promotes self-awareness by focusing on physical sensations and the breath. This technique encourages the brain and body to access stored memories or emotions and process them in a controlled environment. The goal is to release unhelpful beliefs and patterns, creating new, more adaptive ways of responding to everyday demands.

RBM was founded by Alakh Analda in 1993 and was at the forefront of the parasympathetic revolution in Breathwork. Alakh developed RBM decades before the scientific validation of more gentle styles of Breathwork became available.

Eleanor Mann is now the lineage holder of RBM and director at The School of Breathwork. Eleanor “…studied counseling and psychology including honors thesis research into the effects of RBM. Her literature reviews confirmed… that building a baseline of parasympathetic activity in the Nervous System improves wellness in all areas over time, mentally, emotionally, physically and even spiritually. She is continuing to grow and expand the theory base of RBM to include the neurobiology of trauma, breath and interpersonal connection”  – The School of Breathwork.

RBM and Parenting

The way we were raised influences our beliefs, conditioning, and sense of self. When old, unhelpful patterns get activated—especially in moments of stress—we can find ourselves triggered, struggling to respond calmly, and unsure how to support our children’s growth.

This is where RBM is a transformative complement to The Behaviour Blueprint course or allied health services (or even as a stand alone support!).

Within The Behaviour Blueprint, understanding and supporting a child’s behaviour is most effective when we, as parents, are grounded and attuned. RBM offers a direct path to:

Rewriting Unhelpful Conditioning

The beliefs and coping mechanisms we learned in childhood often linger in our parenting. By consciously breathing through and processing these beliefs, we give ourselves permission to parent how we choose—rather than simply reacting from old patterns.

Managing Triggers

When we activate the parasympathetic nervous system through this gentle breathwork, our bodies and minds relax. This increased sense of calm creates the space to respond—rather than react—to our children’s behaviour, reducing triggers and helping us remain present in challenging moments.

Healing Past Experiences

Many parents, particularly those who are neurodivergent and were raised in a predominantly neurotypical world, may have felt the need to mask or conform. RBM supports healing from any past experiences that negatively shaped our self-view, helping us embrace our authentic selves and parent more authentically.

Creating Safety and Trust

As RBM guides us to form a deeper connection with our breath, we cultivate trust and safety in our own bodies. This sense of safety allows us to show up more fully for our children. We become more open, empathic, and adaptable—qualities essential for healthy, supportive parenting.

By breaking old cycles of reactivity and stepping into a state of awareness, RBM helps parents stand in empowerment. We become conscious co-creators of family life, choosing how we wish to respond rather than being driven by unconscious triggers.
